  • Introduction: Geography

The U of M campus is divided into two main areas--the East and West Banks, which are divided by the Mississippi river. The two banks are connected by the Washington Avenue bridge, which also doubles as a very scenic pathway for an easy walk across campus. An easy way to determine which bank you are on is to locate the downtown Minneapolis skyline and if you are on the same side of the river, then you are on the West Bank.

Along campus there are four main areas to find restaurants and entertainment: on the West Bank

    1. 7-Corners
    2. Cedar Ave. and Riverside
    and on the East Bank:
    1. Dinkytown
    2. Stadium Village
Both 7-Corners and Cedar/Riverside locations are located within a couple of blocks from the Carlson School. Dinkytown is the neighborhood north of campus near University Avenue and extending several blocks north. Stadium Village refers to the east end of campus along Washington Ave, near the hospital (the Radisson is considered to be part of the Stadium Village).
