  • INTRODUCTION (On Campus Geography and Location details)

Minnesota's campus is set in Minneapolis and located on the Mississippi river, just a few blocks from the Metrodome and downtown area. The Mississippi River divides the University of Minnesota campus into two parts: the so-called West Bank and East Bank.

    • A map of the campus is available online. It is a very large (600Kb) and detailed map, and may take time to download over a slow connection.
    • Important Note: all streets labeled "south" are on the West Bank, and all streets labeled "southeast" are on the East Bank.
    • All conference locations (meeting spots and lodging sites) have been marked with a star on the map.

The two banks are connected by the Washington Avenue bridge, which also doubles as a very scenic pathway for an easy walk across campus. An easy way to determine which bank you are on is to locate the downtown Minneapolis skyline and if you are on the same side of the river, then you are on the West Bank. Middlebrook dormitory and the Holiday Inn are on the West Bank, with the Holiday Inn actually located at the 7-corners intersection (see restaurants for more details). The Radisson is located on the East Bank on Washington Ave. in the Stadium Village.

Along campus there are four main areas to find restaurants and entertainment: on the West Bank

    1. 7-Corners
    2. Cedar Ave. and Riverside
    and on the East Bank:
    1. Dinkytown
    2. Stadium Village

Both 7-Corners and Cedar/Riverside locations are located within a couple of blocks from the Carlson School. Dinkytown is the neighborhood north of campus near University Avenue and extending several blocks north. Stadium Village refers to the east end of campus along Washington Ave, near the hospital (the Radisson is considered to be part of the Stadium Village).

    Conference Details

    Thursday and Friday

On Thursday and Friday, most activities will be on the WEST BANK. We will use the Carlson School of Management and the Hubert Humphrey Institute.

    • The Carlson School is located at the corner of 19th Ave South and 4th Street South
    • The Humphrey Institute is adjacent to the Carlson School.
    • Dinner on Thursday night is across the river at the Weisman museum (big shiny metal building located on edge of river on East Bank).

    Saturday

On Saturday, our activities will be held in Coffman Memorial Union, across the Washington Avenue Bridge on the EAST BANK. Coffman is just past the large silver Weisman Art museum.

    Paper Presentations

A conference package and the website contain a conference program that has the dates, times, and locations of the paper presentations. All sessions range from 1 hour and fifteen to thirty minutes. Breaks are 15 minutes long and lunch usually lasts for an hour. Paper givers should strive to keep their presentations around 30 minutes with discussants using another 15-20 minutes. This leaves sufficient time for audience questions and discussion.

    Plenary Lectures

These are attended by everyone attending the conference.

    Poster Sessions

    • Both faculty and graduate student sessions will be held in the Carlson School Atrium.
    • The faculty poster session will be held from 1-2:00 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003.
    • The graduate student poster session will be held Friday evening after dinner from 6:30 until about 8:00 p.m.
    • Posters will need to fit onto a 40"x 60" easel (including space reserved for the author's names, affiliation, and title of project). Poster presenters will have access to the Atrium over lunch (faculty) and in the late afternoon (graduate students) on Friday. The University of Minnesota will provide easels, foam/posterboard, and pins/tape. Traditionally, these sessions have been informal but very beneficial to the participants.
